Today a simple but very powerful reminder for you leaders out there: people want to be heard!
Currently I work with a group of executives on a major change initiative. We are in the process of communicating the change to the employees, and are elaborating:
- How will we get people's buy in?
- How will we deal with resistance?
- How will we handle their concerns?
My advice: as a leader, you can't always give people what they want or need. In these situations however, it can help a lot if you really listen to people and take their concerns seriously. It often makes all the difference between keeping people engaged or losing them to the actively disengaged.
Research indicates that people want to feel included, heard and valued, and they will go above and beyond if the essential need of belonging is met.
